Spanish School. 14th century. “Saint Blaise” Wonderful sculpture in carved, gilded, and polychrome wood. 81,5 x 22 x 15 cm. The saint is shown standing in a frontal position, blessing with his right hand, which bears the episcopal ring, a symbol of fidelity, while his left hand holds the lower part of the crozier. He wears a mitre and is dressed according to his episcopal rank: alb, chasuble, and cope. Saint Blaise, bishop of Sebaste and, according to the Golden Legend, later a hermit, was martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian or Licinius at the beginning of the fourth century. He was one of the most popular saints of the Western Middle Ages, thanks to the fame brought about by the proliferation of his relics and his reputation as a miracle worker and healer. Medieval.
