Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, b.1929) x Louis Vuitton Infinity Dots Vivienne Giant 2023 incised with signature and date to underside leather, resin and wood multiple Dimensions:(overall 35.6 x 26 x 9cm) Provenance: presented within original box and packaging Notes: Born in 1929, Yayoi Kusama is widely regarded as one of the most influential living artists. Working across sculpture, installation, performance, painting, and printmaking, her conceptual practice is profoundly informed by lifelong experiences of vivid hallucinations. From the age of ten, these hallucinations manifested as flashes of light and proliferating fields of dots across her visual field, motifs that would become central to her artistic vocabulary. These visions were described by the artist as all-consuming, giving rise to works structured around the concept of “self-obliteration,” in which the boundaries of the individual dissolve and the self is subsumed by an overwhelming visual stimulus. Kusama is best known for her sculptural works and large-scale installations, particularly her Infinity Rooms. These immersive environments invite viewers into liminal spaces constructed through mirrors, repeated forms, and carefully choreographed spatial illusions that destabilise conventional perceptions of scale and orientation. Within these environments, visitors experience a disrupted field of vision and an engulfing sensory condition aligned with Kusama’s philosophy of self-obliteration. Extending her practice beyond the traditional confines of the art world, Kusama has long engaged with commercial production as a site for artistic dissemination. Beginning in 1968 with the creation of avant-garde fashion works for Bloomingdale’s, she later collaborated with major brands to design objects ranging from mobile phones and cosmetics to wearable accessories. In 2006, Kusama began working with Marc Jacobs, then Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, culminating in a collaborative collection released in 2012. The launch was marked by a polka-dot-covered pop-up store in SoHo, subsequently replicated across six international locations, inviting the public to inhabit, wear, and domesticate Kusama’s vision of infinity. In 2023, Kusama once again collaborated with Louis Vuitton, producing a new body of work that includes the Vivienne Giant doll. The release was accompanied by a highly theatrical reimagining of the brand’s flagship stores, with buildings enveloped in polka dots, including London’s Harrods, and a monumental inflatable sculpture of the artist installed at the Paris flagship. This collaboration underscores Kusama’s enduring cultural prominence, while the Vivienne doll functions as both a commercial object and a symbolic figure, capturing not only her distinctive visual language but also the widespread public fascination with the artist herself. This interpretation of the Vivienne Doll reimagines the iconic mascot in Kusama's likeness with her iconic red wig and body adorned with dots. Produced using high-quality materials, including the brand's iconic Epi leather, the doll captures the artist's aesthetic and embodies the brand's collaboration with the doll even clutching a polka-dot Alma bag at her side.
