Alfred Thompson Bricher American, 1837-1908 Monmouth Beach Signed AT Bricher (ll) and inscribed as titled on board beneath mat (ll) Watercolor and graphite pencil on paper laid down to board 14 x 28 inches Provenance: Private collection, Brooklyn, New York Thence by bequest to the present owner Exhibited: American Watercolor Society, 1892, no. 522 (possibly) Alfred Thompson Bricher is known to have painted in New Jersey during the summer of 1881, as well as in 1890, when he sketched at Beach Haven, Toms River, and Monmouth Beach. Although this vibrant, undated watercolor relates stylistically to Bricher's work from around 1880, a work by this title was included in the annual exhibition of the American Watercolor Society in 1892, when it was priced at $100. A closely related, smaller watercolor, A Walk on the Beach, 9.8 x 21.2 inches, was sold at Skinner, Inc. in 1992. The present work may relate to a sketchbook drawing inscribed by the artist, Monmouth Beach Sep 3/91, in the Alfred Bricher Papers at the Archives of American Art (Alfred Bricher Papers, reel 912. frames 141-142). We thank Bricher scholar Jeffrey R. Brown for his kind assistance in cataloging this work.
