"Untitled (Santa Fe Landscape)", An abstracted green, purple and blue landscape seems to billow and distort in the wind. In 1938, Boston-area artist and writer Alfred Morang (1901-1958) moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and joined Emil Bisttram, William Lumpkins and other artists in founding the Transcendental Painting Group. The collective was influenced by Wassily Kandinsky and other abstract expressionists, and sought to tap into a deep spirituality through non-objective painting. Working from his Canyon Road studio, Morang created a distinctive abstract vocabulary of tangled forms and starkly contrasting colors.
