Gouache on paper (two sheets) Germany, Berlin, 1982 Luciano Castelli (b. 1951) - Swiss artist Signed and dated in pencil lower right 'Luciano Castelli 82' Dimensions, mounted: 168 x 121 cm Good condition Luciano Castelli rose to fame in the 1980s as one of the 'Neuen Wilde'; his erotic large format works fetch up to 70,000 euros on the international auction market The art work 'Intercourse' by the Swiss artist Luciano Castelli dates to the year 1982, at a time when the artist rose to fame as one of the acclaimed 'Neuen Wilde' in Berlin. Their painting style was labeled 'fierce' and the artists 'wild'. The art works of the time speak of an explicit eroticism with an underlying expressive dynamic. Bordering on pornography, Castelli's monumental work 'Intercourse' does not concern itself with nudity but rather with the physical act. The work is in good condition. It is rendered on two sheets and shows several creases from previous folding. In the upper corners there are small holes visible from a previous mounting, there is a small tear in the upper right hand corner and the reverse shows remains of a former mount in the upper left hand corner. The work is signed and dated in pencil on the right hand side 'Luciano Castelli 82'. The two sheets each measure 121 x 86 cm and the overall dimensions are 168 x 121 cm. Luciano Castelli (b. 1951) Luciano Castelli was born in Lucerne in 1951, where he studied under Max von Moos at the School of Applied Arts between 1968 and 69. A three year apprenticeship as a graphic designer followed. In 1972 he took part in documenta V in Kassel. In the following year he moved to Austria where he produced his first self-portraits. In 1974 he took part in the famous exhibition 'Transformer - Aspects of Travesty' held at the Kunstmuseum Lucerne in Switzerland. After a stay in Rome the artist moved to Berlin in 1978 where he made the acquaintance of the artists Rainer Fetting and Salomé. Together they open the Galerie am Moritzplatz as a self-help gallery to exhibit their work. He founded a punk rock band 'Geile Tiere' ('Horny Animals') together with Salomé and shoot the movie 'Rooms full of mirrors' with Rainer Fetting in 1982. The following year, the three artists held a performance at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The artists were by this point well established as the 'Neuen Wilde'. In 1984 Castelli shoot the movie 'Venice by night' with Knut Hoffmeister and was awarded the Normann Prize in Lucerne. Today Luciano Castelli lives and works in Zurich. His works are part of numerous private and public collections, such as the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection in New York or the Maison Eurpéenne de la Photographie in Paris.
