The monk is displayed with a friendly smile dressed in a frock and holding a cup in his hand. The fine drawing especially delights with the monk's face, testifying to Grützner's high workmanship. The drawing 'Portrait of a Monk' is signed and dated lower right 'E Grützner 1905'. It is matted and in good condition, showing only slight wear. The cardboard is slightly browned due to age and minimally stained. The cardboard dimensions are 40.5 x 29.5 cm, the mat measuring 55 x 43 cm. Eduard von Grützner (1846-1925) A native of Silesia, the genre painter Eduard von Grützner initially began a training at the School of Applied Arts in Munich with Hermann Dyck, but soon switched to the Ancient class of the Academy under the direction of Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Alexander Ströhuber. In 1865, Grützner joined the painting class of Hermann Anschütz at the Academy, and in 1867 the class of Carl Theodor von Piloty. In 1870, Grützner opened his own studio in Munich. Besides Carl Spitzweg and Franz von Defregger, Grützner is considered the most influential Munich genre painter in the second half of the 19th Century. Grützner preferably depicted motifs from the monastic life, and was therefore called 'monk painter'.
