(19.5 x 29.3cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Oklahoma. note:/span The present composition follows the right side of 'The Death of Actaeon' given variously to Rubens, Frans Snynders and Frans Wouters. Burchard lists nine variations of this work, eight of which are paintings (see Arnout Balis, Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, Part XVIII, vol II, Hunting Scenes, New York, 1986, no. 23; with copies number 1, 2 and 23a illustrated, relating directly to the present work). The story of Actaeon is from Ovid Metamorphoses 3.13 in which Diana turns Actaeon into a stag who is attacked by his own hounds as a punishment for the latter's glimpsing Diana and her companions bathing in a grotto.
