John Singer Sargent American, 1856-1925 Portrait of Miss Stephens Inscribed To Miss Stephens (ul) and signed John S. Sargent (ur) Graphite pencil on paper laid to card 14 x 9 7/8 inches Provenance: Miss Emily Henrietta Stephens, London Exhibited: London, Royal Academy of Arts, Exhibition of Works by the Late John S. Sargent, R.A., Winter Exhibition, 1926, no. 429 Literature: Royal Academy of Arts, Exhibition of Works by the Late John S. Sargent, R.A., Winter Exhibition, 1926, no. 429, p. 65 The subject of this deftly executed sketch is a young art student named Emily Henrietta Stephens (1824-98), daughter of Richard Stephens of Eastington Park, Gloucestershire and Henrietta Pottinger, daughter of Sir Henry Pottinger, 1st Bart. In a letter dated October 14 (no year given, probably 1899 but certainly pre-1900), Sargent writes to Miss Stephens, "'allow me to explode and scatter to the four winds your proposal in as far as a business one. In that respect I will have none of it -- but I should be delighted to do a pencil sketch of you and offer it to you or to your mother if it is in any way successful. -- On these terms it would give me great pleasure to do it, especially if you come tomorrow Friday at 3 to Fulham Road -- All this month I am at the Academy almost all the time & I have very little choice of hours'." [Courtesy John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonne] Upon Sargent's death, Miss Stephens lent her drawing to the memorial exhibition of the artist's work organized by the Royal Academy of Arts. This drawing has been reviewed and accepted as a genuine work of the artist by the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonné Committee. C
