Catalogue raisonné: Schwarz 170 V Plate dimensions: 18.4 x 16.5 cm Expressive drypoint with dynamic strokes and distinctive light-dark-contrasts; the auction record for an etching by Lovis Corinth is currently set at around €8,700 at international auctions This drypoint was made by Lovis Corinth in 1914 in an edition of 50 copies. Depicted are four naked women that are overseen by a eunuch. The work is conducted in dynamic strokes varying in density and thus obtain an effective dark-light-contrast. The work is signed at the lower right in pencil 'Lovis Corinth'. The reverse is inscribed in pencil with 'Lieber Papa ... (?)' [Dear Dad], which could possibly be some kind of dedication. The sheet shows heavy signs of age and wear. It is toned and slightly corrugated and the edges are mat stained. Moreover it has some slight foxing. The dimensions of the plate are 18.4 x 16.5 cm, while the sheet has an overall dimension of 24.5 x 36.2 cm. Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) Lovis Corinth (born Franz Heinrich Louis Corinth) was one of the most eminent and influential German Impressionists. His later works are often considered a combination of Impressionism and Expressionism. Corinth studied at the Königsberg art academy and was a student of Otto Günther. Corinth focused on painting portraits and landscapes, creating over thousand paintings, watercolor drawings and prints. In addition he wrote books and essays for several art magazines. Many of Corinth's works can be found in national and international galleries and museums today, a large part of his oeuvre is privately owned.
