The paper is slightly paled in the upper mat window. In the bottom area professionally restored damages as well as repaired tears all round the edges, otherwise overall of good impression. The image measures 60 x 35.5 cm, the sheet dimensions are 62.6 x 39.1 cm, the framed dimensions 84 x 64 cm. Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945) Born in Darmstadt, Ludwig von Hofmann completed his training at the art academies of Dresden, Karlsruhe and Paris. Towards the end of the 1880s, he moved to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. Since 1890 Hofmann lived in Berlin, where became part of the artists’ circles with Corinth, Liebermann and Klinger, and became involved with the Berlin Secession. From 1894 to 1900, he spent some time in Rome and in his villa in Fiesole. Since 1895, he was a member of the ‘Pan’ magazine, and since 1898 a member of the ‘Berliner Secession’. In 1903, he became a professor at the Weimar Art School. From 1916 to 1931, he was a professor at the Academy of Art in Dresden.
