Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 3,400 Euro Offered here is a pastel drawing by the artist Ludwig von Hofmann which originated in the period around 1910-20. The artist was able to include some illustrious personalities to his collectors during his lifetime, among them the Austria-Hungarian Empress Elisabeth and the art historian Heinrich Wölfflin as well as Wilhelm von Bode. Influenced by Symbolism and Art Nouveau, his subjects show a reception of antiquity in connection with his own ideas of Arcadia, as it is brilliantly illustrated in our pastel drawing. Condition: The work is overall in very good condition. The sheet is mounted on the top edge within a mat. In the lower left edge tiny imperfection visible, otherwise generally of very good impression. The nearly sheet-sized image measures 28.3 x 43.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 49 x 65 cm. Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945) Born in Darmstadt, Ludwig von Hofmann completed his training at the art academies of Dresden, Karlsruhe and Paris. Towards the end of the 1880s, he moved to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. Since 1890 Hofmann lived in Berlin, where became part of the artists’ circles with Corinth, Liebermann and Klinger, and became involved with the Berlin Secession. From 1894 to 1900, he spent some time in Rome and in his villa in Fiesole. Since 1895, he was a member of the ‘Pan’ magazine, and since 1898 a member of the ‘Berliner Secession’. In 1903, he became a professor at the Weimar Art School. From 1916 to 1931, he was a professor at the Academy of Art in Dresden.
