Next to a comprehensive cartographic work, he also created pitturesque landscape views. This washed pen and ink drawing shows a landscape with a cattle herd and shepherd in front of a decayed castle with adjacent stable. The dynamic drawing gives evidence of the great artistic abilities of Matthäus Merian. The drawing is inscribed (illegible) and numbered on top ‘Bey Stift S… / 38’. The sheet is cut off on both sides. It is framed under a mat. The paper displays marginal wear, age-related browning and foxing. There are tapes on the reverse. The dimensions of the sheet are 12.5 x 14.8 cm. Matthäus Merian (1593-1650) The Swiss-German copper engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian the Elder published numerous maps, city views and chronics. He was born in Basel and studied drawing and copper engraving at the engraver Friedrich Meyer in Zurich. 1619 he went to Frankfurt where he worked for the publisher Johann Theodor de Bry, whose daughter he married. He took over and completed the editions of ‘Grand Voyages’ and ‘Petit Voyages’, which de Bry started in 1590. Together with Martin Zeiller he produced the popular series of ‘Topographia’ with a total of 21 volumes. The work was continued by his sons Matthäus the Younger and Caspar.
