Eastman Johnson (1824-1906) Study of Alfrederick Smith Hatch (1829-1904), for The Hatch Family, 1 871 Signed, "E.J." l.l., graphite and gouache on paper, sketch of head of unknown young man on verso, framed. 18 in. x 13 1/2 in. (sight) PROVENANCE: By descent in the Hatch Family to the present owner. The Hatch Family group, currently in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, shows three generations in the elegant library of their Park Avenue home. Commissioned by Hatch in 1871, the work was considered by Johnson to be his masterpiece. The group portrait was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Frederick H. Hatch in 1926.
