작품 상세

Inscribed lower left in pencil: 321. Framed. French artists of the 18th century like Watteau, Pater, Boucher, Fragonard and Greuze utilised mainly red chalk for their studies. The same applies to the present drawing, a study for Jean-Baptiste Pater´s most famous painting „Les vivandières de Brest", today housed in the London Wallace Collection. It shows a female figure from the central group of sutlers. She represents the only woman in the composition holding a child in her arms and without male company. Pater´s magnificent painting is dated around 1728, so we can assume a date of around 1727 and 1728 for the present drawing (cf F. Ingersoll-Smouse, Jean-Baptiste Pater, 1928, no. 405, ill. 107).
