Cooper was best known for his animal paintings, predominantly cattle and sheep either watering or just in a meadow, also adding the animals to the works of Thomas Creswick and Frederick Richard Lee. This painting picks up on the fine detail captured in his vision of cattle. Through his life he exhibited in numerous places but most noteably were his 266 exhibits shown at the Royal Academy between 1833-1902, a record for continuous exhibiting at the academy.
