EARLY BEANIE BACKUS WWII WATERCOLOR FROM NAVY DAYS Albert Ernest "Beanie" Backus (American, 1906-1990). Loose watercolor painting by American artist Albert Backus, harbor scene and most likely the same port from his time in the Navy, circa 1940. Later known as the father of the Florida Highwaymen artists, Backus recorded his journeys through his artwork. During WWII, while in the Navy aboard the USS Hermitage, he painted in both watercolor and oils scenes of the South Pacific, the California coast and of the European ports he visited.
