Edward Henry Potthast American, 1857-1927 Hilltop (Monhegan Island) Inscribed This painting was made by/my Uncle (Edw H. Potthast)/and has been in my/possession since his death/in March 1927./Alina Potthast Blackburn on an old label affixed to the reverse Oil on canvasboard 8 x 10 inches Provenance: The artist By descent through the family to present owner Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, American Masters 1840-1920, Feb. 14-Mar. 22, 2008. This image of a rocky shore on Monhegan Island at night belongs to a group of works Potthast created on a trip to the island in 1925. It and a similar work entitled A Moonlight Night (collection Remak Ramsay) appear to have been studies for At the Summit (oil on canvas, 40 x 50 inches, Cincinnati Art Museum). Potthast's use of an easily transported panel in the present work indicates that he created it on the spot. He devoted over half of the image to the sky, adhering to a simplified and carefully articulated design that borders on the abstract. This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the work of Edward Potthast in preparation by Mary Ran. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
