ROLLA SIMS TAYLOR (American, 1872-1970) Downtown on the River Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61.0 cm) Signed lower right: Rolla Taylor Multiple titles inscribed verso Born in Galveston, Taylor began painting in 1890 and moved to San Antonio the following year. He studied with Robert Onderdonk and Jose Arpa, and was later influenced by Julian Onderdonk. He also received a law degree from the Cuero Institute, Cuero, Texas. Taylor was a charter member of the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the Texas Fine Arts Association. He exhibited in the 1910 Cotton Carnival and the San Antonio competitions. During his career, Taylor painted a number of scenes of the San Antonio River, often including its bridges. Downtown on the River is a fairly rare example, as it has a slight stylization leaning toward Regionalism, something rather unusual in Taylor's oeuvre.
