DESCRIPTION: Arthur Meltzer (American, 1893-1989). The Patriarch and the Sapling. Circa 1969. Oil on canavs, backed with cardboard. Signed, lower right. Titled and inscribed "Polaroid 6-30-1969", verso and with a label marked with title, size and inscribed "The majority of the great oak in contrast with this young beach interested me; keeping company with these age old lichen covered boulders in winter garb. Sold to Mr. and Mrs. Rob't Cushman May 1970, Arthur Meltzer." In the original speckled white and gold leaf frame. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Meltzer first attended the Minneapolis School of Arts and later the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He traveled throughout Europe, but remained settled in Pennsylvania. His work has been exhibited at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Woodmere Art Museum, to name a few. PROVENANCE: The consignor was a cousin of Meltzer. Purchased directly from Meltzer by the consignor's parents. MEASUREMENTS: 16" x 20". Overall with frame 28-1/2" x 24-5/8". CONDITION: Water stain to cardboard back, verso.
