Jacques Courtois (1621-1676), assigned to WAR I. First of the pair of paintings depicting probably one of the large battles of the first phase of the Thirty-year war. Paintings depict the scene of the raging battle of the heavy cavalry with the thick cloud of dust raised by the beating horse hooves and by the firing of guns of the infantry. Oil on canvas, 45x91 cm. Framed. Condition B/C. Jacques Courtois, called Il Borgognone - French painted, born in Saint-Hippolyte by Besançon. He started to study art by his father, also painter. In 15 years of age he travelled to Italy and then worked for three years as a soldier in French Army. His period influenced heavily his later art works. After Milan period he continued his studies in Bologna where he taught in studio of Guido Reni. He quickly regained fame as an artist, being known mostly for his war pictures. After he became a widower, he entered the Jesuit order and continued to paint for the needs of Jesuits. Jacques Courtois (1621-1676), připsáno BITVA I. Jacques Courtois, zvaný Il Borgognone - francouzský malíř, narodil se v Saint-Hippolyte u Besançonu a zpočátku se učil malbě u svého otce, rovněž malíře. V 15 letech se vydal na studijní cestu do Itálie a poté po tři roky působil jako voják ve francouzském vojsku. Toto období výrazně ovlivnilo jeho budoucí uměleckou tvorbu. Po milánském období pokračoval ve studiích v Bologni, kde se učil v dílně Guida Reniho. Jako malíř si brzy získal značné renomé, proslavily ho především jeho malby bitevních scén. Poté co ovdověl, vstoupil do jezuitského řádu a nadále maloval pro potřeby Tovaryšstva Ježíšova. Jacques Courtois (1621-1676), zugeschrieben SCHLACHT I. Jacques Courtois, auch bekannt als Il Borgognone, war ein französischer Maler der Schlachten. Er wurde in Saint-Hippolyte bei Besançon geboren und lernte in jungen Jahren erst bei seinem Vater Pierre Courtois, der auch ein Maler war. Schon im Alter von 15 Jahren unternahm er eine Studienreise nach Italien (Mailand). Dort trat er in die Armee ein und verbrachte die nächsten drei Jahre als Soldat, was seine spätere Karriere stark beeinflusste. 1639 verließ Courtois die Armee und ging nach Bologna, wo ihn Guido Reni einige Zeit lehrte. Durch die Schlachtenszenen wurde er schnell berühmt. Nach dem Tod seiner Gemahlin begab er sich nach Rom, wo er 1657 in das Jesuitennoviziat von San Andrea al Quirinale eintrat und weiter nur für das Orden malte.
