He created numerous views of canyons; comparable works by Rieger fetch up more than 15,000 euros at international auctions This superb oil painting by Albert Rieger (1834-1905) features one of the most popular subjects of the Austrian painter: the depiction of a canyon with a rushing brook. The painting is titled on the back 'Partie von dem Ensthale' [View of Enstal]. Showing an impressive view of a mountain torrent in Enstal, Austria, coming rushing down the rocks. Rendered in chiaroscuro, this painting displays all facets of nature in an impressive way. One can literally hear the sound of the rushing brook surrounded by the wafts of mist. Massive mountains and huge pine trees appear on the sides. The light shines through the cloudy sky and displays the spray of the river in a theatrical manner. With this painting, Albert Rieger succeeded in creating a dramatic and dynamic composition of true mastery. The painting is signed lower right 'A. Rieger pinx'. The back of the stretcher shows a label with the inscription 'Partie von dem Ensthale, gemalt von Albert Rieger' [View of Enstal, painted by Albert Rieger']. The painting is overall in good condition, featuring some signs of age. The colour surface shows a patina due to age. Under UV-light are visible two major restorations (in the sky and above the signature), and several small touch-ups. The partly silver-coloured wood frame is in very good condition, displaying only minimal signs of use. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 81.5 x 107 cm. The stretcher frame measures 74 x 99.5 cm. Albert Rieger (1834-1905) A native of Trieste living in Vienna, the painter and lithographer Albert Rieger was a pupil of his father, the marine and landscape painter Giuseppe Rieger. He was also influenced by the works of the German artist Bernhard Fiedler (1816-1904). Rieger's preferred subjects were marines and landscapes. In addition, he created lithographed views of Trieste. Albert Rieger presented his paintings with great success in numerous exhibitions in Europe. Today, his works are presented in important collections, for example at the Museum of Altenburg and in Wroclaw.
