Dill was a significant animal painter, who created numerous representations of tigers and lions, inspired by his travels through North Africa. The present work is a particularly attractive work through the use of various media. The sprayed application of color, combined with the brush and pencil strokes - some lines are even scratched into the cardboard - enhances the presentation with liveliness. The sheet is overall in good condition. The upper left corner shows a short tear (approx. 1 cm), the sheet edges show tiny defects due to framing. On the reverse the upper margin shows remains of fiber due to previous mounting. The work is signed 'Otto Dill' lower left. The frame shows signs of wear. The framed works measures 29.5 x 27.5 cm, the sheet measures 17.5 x 15.7 cm. Otto Dill (1884-1957) Between 1908 and 1914 Otto Dill studied painting at the academy in Munich, where he was a master student of the renowned animal painter Heinrich von Zügel. In the summer of 1917, the artist already took part in an exhibition at the Glaspalast in Munich. As a member of the Munich Secession further exhibitions followed soon. Dill extensively traveled through North Africa, Italy, France and Spain. He rendered the impressions gained there in his paintings and drawings - desert and Bedouin themes as well as numerous animal representations. In 1930 the artist moved to Neustadt an der Weinstraße were Dill created primarily landscapes. During the Second World War a large collection of his work was destroyed in a bomb attack. In his native town of Neustadt, a museum, which is solely dedicated to the work Otto Dill opened in 2001.
