From the year 1976 this oil painting depicts a free composition of a number of different ocher colors in plastic-pastose application of paint that adds to the total impression of the painting. Schoofs, whose artistic origins lie in Art Informel, found his pictorial language in a combination of landscape and figural subject matters with a gestural accentuated style. Very clear in this oil painting is the tense connection with the organic, determining the aesthetic of Schoof's oeuvre. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'Schoofs 76'. Work and frame are in very good condition with traces of wear and age. The stretcher frame measures 90 x 80 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 95.8 x 85.5 cm. Rudolf Schoofs (1932-2000) Rudolf Schoofs ranks amongst the most prolific German artists of the postwar period. His artistic origins lie in the art of the Informel of the late fifties. He studied from 1952 until 1954 at the earlier Bauhaus master Georg Muche in Krefeld, whose assistant he became from 1954 until 1958. He taught as a professor at the Staatliche Werkkunstschule Kassel and afterwards at the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal. In 1975, he received a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and in 1976 at the Academy in Stuttgart. Numerous awards honor his work, among them the Eduard von der Heydt-Prize, the Prize for critical prints Hanover and the Cultural Prize of his hometown Goch. Next to a number of single and group exhibitions in museum all over Europe and also in the US, his work was on show at the documenta in Kassel in 1977. In 1981, he was represented at the Sao Paolo Biennale.
