Bernhard Keil, Allegory of Sight CertificateMina Gregori, Florence 27.6.2007. - Raffaela Colace, Cremona 18.3.2009.This small round image shows an elderly woman looking at herself in a mirror and trying on an earring. A further round painting by Bernard Keil in the Museum of Calais depicts an old woman eating, and it is likely that both works belong to a now incomplete series on the five senses. Both this work "Allegory of Sight" and the painting in Calais "Allegory of Taste" can be stylistically placed within the artist's Venetian phase, between 1651 and 1654 (according to Mina Gregori's certificate).Bernhard Keil was born in Denmark and taught by Rembrandt in Holland. Following several short sojourns to Germany, he finally moved to Italy in 1651 - residing first in Venice, before moving on to Milan, Bergamo, Ravenna and finally to Rome, where he spent the rest of his life. His influence was certainly felt in the Italian art of his time, and his style of "chiaroscuro", reception of Rembrandt's work and his Dutch brand of moralism all left their mark. 35.5 cm diameter
