Pieter Codde, Elegant Company Smoking in an Interior The composition, figures, colour scheme and subject of this painting are all typical of the work of the Amsterdam based genre painter Pieter Codde, and is recorded as his work in the photographic archive of the RKD in the Hague. It shows an interior framed on the left by an open door and on the right by a large fireplace. A woman is shown seated in profile at the table in the center, along with two men who are obviously paying their attentions to her. As with most of Codde's paintings, the artist has cleverly imbued the work with a suggestive moral quality which goes deeper than what meets the eye. 38.4 x 49.5 cm
