Pieter Verelst, Portrait of Prince Ruprecht of the Rhine (?) Signed lower right: P. Verelst. 1649The man depicted in this painting, whose armour indicates his status as a ruler or military leader, is presumably Prince Rupert, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Cumberland (1619-1682) who in 1649, at the time this portrait was painted, was 30 years old. Rupert was the son of the Elector Palatinate Friedrich V, nephew to the English King Charles I, and among the most frequently depicted and famous men of his time. He was portrayed among others by van Dyck, P. Lely, G. van Honthorst and not least by Simon Verelst, son of Pieter Verelst. This artist, who was also a painter of genre scenes, biblical histories and "tronies" inspired by Rembrandt, was a pupil of J. G. Cuyp and presumably also of G. Dou. He in turn taught his three sons, who all later settled in London. Among them was the aforementioned Simon Verelst, who gained fame as a painter of flowers. 74.5 x 58.5 cm
