ARBIT BLATAS Still Life with a Basket. Oil on board. 610x430 mm; 24x17 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Blatas (1908-1999) was of Lithuanian-Jewish descent. An artistic prodigy, he left Lithuania at age 15 for France and by his early 20s had become the youngest member of the School of Paris, along with such luminaries as Picasso, Braque and Léger. He fled Nazi-occupied France in 1941, settling in New York and becoming a U.S. citizen.
