The artist has repeatedly painted similar themes very popular at the time. In the foreground are depicted two King Charles Spaniels sitting on a red velvet cushion with brocade border. In the left area can be seen a still life with pumpkin and grapes arranged on a wooden table, on which is also placed the beautiful parrot. The interaction of the parrot and one of the dogs and the fine brush strokes, which are evident especially in the brocade border of the cushion and the animals, are particularly striking in this painting by Francesco Fieravino. The canvas has been relined. There are a few paint losses and infillings to the edges. The paint surface is thin in the darker areas. Inspection under UV light is hindered by the thick varnish, but it is still possible to see old retouching scattered throughout, especially affecting the background, strengthening to the darker details of the still life, the architecture, the dogs´ fur, the parrot´s plumage and the cushion. The gilt frame shows light wear. The lower front bar features a plaque with the artist name 'W. Gabron' (referring to an earlier attribution). The overall dimensions, framed, are 97.5 x 116 cm. The stretcher measures 82 x 100.5 cm. Francesco Fieravino (1611-1652), called Maltese Francesco Fieravino, called Maltese, is especially recorded for his still lifes and painted tapestries.
