작품 상세
Oil on canvas, relined Presumably Italy, 17th century Circle of Trophime Bigot (1597-1650) - French painter Realistic depiction in the caravaggiste tradition Overall dimensions: 90 x 67 cm Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland The painter uses here a strong chiaroscuro, which models forms and objects and creates a dramatic effect, following the example of Caravaggio The present painting is the work of an Italian artist active in the circle of the French painter Trophime Bigot in the 17th century. According to the convention of many artists from the North, the French man spent some time in Rome, where he discovered the works of the Italian artist Caravaggio (1571-1610). Impressed by Caravaggio's use of light and dark contrasts, the 'chiaroscuro', Bigot became a follower of the Caravaggist style and therefore contributed to its recognition north of the Alps. The present painting depicts the portrait of a young man with pipe in front of a burning candle. In this way the work is closely related to the paintings by Trophime Bigot, also known as the 'Candlelight Master'. The canvas has been relined. There are a few scratches and paint-losses affecting the surface; but especially the edges. The inspection under UV light reveals extended retouching and restoration to the background and to the flesh tone. The stretcher measures 90 x 67 cm. Trophime Bigot (1597-1650) The French painter Trophime Bigot was born in Arles and spent some years in Rome (1620-1634), before he returned to France. Between 1638 and 1642 he was active in Aix-en-Provence and finally moved to Avignon in 1644. The majority of his works depicts figures and scenes by candlelight which clearly refers to the subtle chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio. For a long time the artist was named 'Candlelight Master', until it was finally possible in the 1960s to identify his identity.
