Oil on canvas Holland, 19th century Jan Christianus Schotel (1787-1838) - Dutch marine painter Signed lower right 'J. C. Schotel' Large-scale marine painting in the typical style of the artist Overall dimensions, framed: 113 x 142 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany Large-scale marine paintings by Schotel are sought after on the international market and can fetch several tenth of thousands of Euros The present painting is a work of the Dutch artist Jan Christianus Schotel, who was a famous marine painter of the 19th century. It depicts a wide coastal landscape with a deep horizon and a calm sea, which is lined with a number of sailing and fishing boats. The Netherlands marine painting genre saw its first golden period already in the 17th century and can be regarded as an expression of the self-understanding of a naval nation. For this reason it was always appreciated and remained a lucrative genre for artists. With Romanticism and Historicism in the 19th century, many marine painters were interested in their national past and re-interpreted known maritime subjects. The canvas used to be widely torn lower right; the affected areas have been restored, retouched and supported with a larger piece of linen from the backside. The mentioned areas of retouching are slightly discolored and therefore visible to the naked eye. Besides, there is small hole in the lower part of the depiction. Smaller scattered damages to the canvas have also been restored, retouched and supported by smaller pieces of linen from the verso. There are light marks along the edges of the canvas due to the pressure of the stretcher. Accordingly, the paint surface is slightly affected, where the wooden frame has rubbed. The varnish is clearly dirty and inspection under UV light reveals older retouchings to the areas of the sky and to the lower details of the subject. The wooden frame is gilded and only shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 113 x 142 cm and the stretcher measures 100 x 128 cm. Jan Christianus Schotel (1787-1838) The artist Jan Christianus Schotel lived and worked in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, which is located about twenty kilometers south-east of Rotterdam. The artist was trained by Dordrecht marine painters such as Martinus Schouman (1770-1848) and Jacob van Strij (1756-1815), who influenced and guided his artistic development. Schotel later became a member of the local artists' association 'Teekengenootschap Pictura' and was the father of Petrus Johannes Schotel (1808-1865), who continued his profession as a marine painter.
