Achenbach painted it at the age of only 15 years, probably after a painting of his older brother, Andreas Achenbach. At that time, Oswald Achenbach was heavily influenced by his brother and the style of the Düsseldorf Academy as to the subjects and style of painting. The atmospheric composition depicts three sailboats on stormy seas at a coast with houses and a stone tower with Dutch flag. In the foreground is depicted a boat with passengers rowing to the shore. The artist has captured the upcoming storm in an atmospheric lighting. The painting is signed and dated lower right, 'O. Achenbach 1842', as well as indistinctly inscribed 'nach A' (?) [after A]. It is mounted in a gold-toned stucco frame and in good overall condition. The canvas has been relined, and the paint surface shows minor craquelure, areas of abrasion and light framing marks. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the edges. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 61 x 68.5 cm, and the stretcher frame measures 29 x 37 cm. Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905) Oswald Achenbach was born in Düsseldorf and visited the elementary class of the Düsseldorf Academy since 1835. His older brother Andreas is considered, such as Oswald Achenbach himself, one of the most famous landscape painters of the 19th century. In 1841, Oswald Achenbach left the Academy and went on various study trips, including Bavaria, Tyrol and Italy. Back in Düsseldorf, he joined various painters' associations and exhibited regularly from 1850. He was already internationally known at this time. From 1852, he received international honors, among others in Amsterdam, Paris, St. Petersburg, Rotterdam and Mexico. In 1863, Aschenbach was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Academy.
