Shown is a beautiful Norwegian landscape with a rushing river running through. Eckenbrecher undertook numerous journeys including Norway. As a student of the famous landscape painter Oswald Achenbach his works shows the influence of his teacher regarding scenery and composition as well as the use of light and color. The painting presented here focuses on the force of nature, which is further visualized by the staffage of the watermills that almost appear to be carried away by the powerful flow of the river. The painting is signed and dated 'T. v. Eckenbrecher 1917'. It shows occasional pin-point and unobtrusive color losses, otherwise the painting is in overall very good condition. The stretcher measures 63 x 103 cm, the framed dimensions are 93 x 130 cm. The frame shows slight signs of wear. Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher (1842-1921) The German landscape and marine painter Karl Paul Themistocles von Eckenbrecher was born in 1842 in Athens. As the son of a naval officer, he grew up at various locations, including Athens, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Constantinople and Potsdam. In Düsseldorf, he received private lessons in painting by the famous landscape painter Oswald Achenbach, who influenced him greatly. Eckenbrecher traveled to many parts of Europe, especially Norway and the Middle East as well as Africa and the Philippines. All these impressions result in the motifs of his paintings.
