Redoute 1839" Known as the ìRaphael of flowersî, Pierre Joseph Redoute was the official court painter of Marie Antoinette at Versailles, and later of Josephine Bonaparteís at Malmaison. While the Belgian painter and botanist was primarily self taught (within a family of artists), ultimately he was guided into the much respected field of botanical illustration. Under the direction of several acclaimed instructors he came to catalog and dissect flora in various collections and participate in several botanical expeditions.
