Mary Beale, after Sir Peter Lely (British, 1632-1697) Portrait of Sir Thomas Isham, Bt. (1657-1681) oil on canvas h:44 w: 36 cm This portrait is a reduced copy by Mary Beale of a portrait by Sir Peter Lely (British, 1618-1680). The original portrait, still in the possession of the Isham family and hanging at Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire, measures 50 x 40 inches. It was painted circa 1675, very shortly before the sitter set off on his European travels. Sir Thomas Isham succeeded to the family baronetcy on the death of his father Sir Justinian Isham on 2nd March 1675. The date of Sir Thomas' portrait by Lely would suggest that it was commissioned to mark his inheritance. He was the third baronet and died at an early age.
