Watercolor on laid paper Germany, 1930s Circle of Karl Hubbuch (1891-1979) - German painter, draftsman, graphic artist and photographer Sheet size: 42 x 31 cm Good Condition Provenance: Acquired directly from Ellen Hubbuch, since then privately owned Watercolor in fresh colors from the circle of the artist Karl Hubbuch; the figures show the characteristic edgy faces This watercolor comes from the circle of the artist and professor Karl Hubbuch, who is considered a leading representative of the New Objectivity. His drawings represent the socially critical view of society, yet they are based on a certain empathy. Karl Hubbuchs works certainly show the influences of his role models, such as Max Beckmann, George Grosz or Emil Orlik. Therefor it is very likely that his students were also stylistically influenced by the work of their teacher. The watercolor is professionally mounted on the upper edge (reversible) and matted. It is overall in good condition. The lower right area shows a crease mark, otherwise of very good impression and fresh colors. Sheet size: 42 x 31 cm. Dimensions framed: 63 x 53.5 cm. Karl Hubbuch (1891-1979) Born in Karlsruhe, Hubbuch attended the local State Academy of Fine Arts from 1908 to 1912. He then studied at the School of the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin under Emil Orlik, where he also met George Grosz. From 1920 to 1922, he was a master student of Walter Conz and Ernst Wuertenberger. In 1922, he studied at the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, again under Orlik. From 1924, he taught lithography at the Academy in Karlsruhe. In 1928, he was appointed a full-time professor. In 1930, he published along with Hermann Brand, Erwin Spuler and Anton Weber the critical artist magazine Zapko in Karlsruhe (two editions). During the Third Reich, he was not allowed to exhibit his works from 1935 to 1945. In the 1940s, he also worked as a ceramic artist.
