An early 18th century blue and gilt dish after a design by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), the central caterpillar and flowers enclosed a floral vine guilloche rim band, 34cm (13.5 in) diameter (R) Merian was awarded a grant from Amsterdam to study the development of caterpillars into insects in Surinam which led to her publication of 'Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium' in 1705. Her illustrations were being copied onto Chinese porcelain by the 1730's
