DEFREGGER, FRANZ VON 1835 Stronach - 1921 Munich Portrait of an African with a White Headscarf. Oil on paper. Laid down on cardboard. 53 x 39 cm. Signed and dated upper left: Defregger 1862. Framed. Literature: Listed and depicted in: Defregger, Hans Peter: Defregger 1835-1921. Rosenheim 1983, fig. p. 276. This portrait study is one of the earliest known oil paintings of the artist. In 1860 he sold the farm he inherited from his parents to emigrate to America. These plans, however, were never realised so he applied for the entrance at the Munich Academy where began his studies in the summer of 1861. Therefore this work from the artist's study years dated 1862 belongs to his first portraits with which he documented the Tirolese socitey throughout his entire later creative work.
