CONINXLOO, GILLIS VON III 1544 Antwerp - before 1607 Amsterdam - attributed Battue in the Forest. Oil on wood. Partly parquetted. 53 x 74,5 cm. Framed. Literature: cp. catalogue "Die Flämische Landschaft", Essen-Vienna 2003, cat. 52-54 Infrared photograph Bavarian Staatsgemäldesammlung. Gillis van Coninxloo III. was a Dutch landscapist. Amongst others he was a student of Gillis Mostaert in Antwerp. For a short period of time he worked independently, then made a journey through France and Italy, but returned to Antwerp in 1570. There he married and became a member in the St. Lukasgilde. In 1595 he moved to Amsterdam where he ran a workshop. Presumably landscapists like Hercules Seghers or Esaias van de Velde were trained in this workshop. Coninxloo is particularly known for his forest landscapes just like in the present painting. The depiction shows a thick web of trees standing very close to each other. Only scatteredly light can find its way through this thicket. The setting is animated by few figure staffages.
