작품 상세

A smaller version of this motif, possibly a study for the present large-scale work, was auctioned by Lempertz in 1985 (auction 609, Lot 261). The 38 x 51 cm painting was inscribed to the reverse "Klösterli auf dem Rigi". The composition and most of the motifs were identical to those in this painting, such as the group of ramblers, the haystack in the left foreground, the village in the valley and mount Rigi rising from the morning mists. In 1864 and 1865, Oswald Achenbach accompanied his wife Julie Arnz on convalescence trips to Rigi, for which he delayed a planned trip to Italy. Nowadays, the 1800 meter high mount Rigi, which is known as "Queen of the Mountains", is a popular hiking and health resort.
