Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen (American, 1890-1967) Baroness Hildegard Anna Augusta Elizabeth Freiin Rebay von Ehrenwiesen, or Hilla for short, was born in Strasbourg of then Alsace-Lorraine. She studied at the Cologne Kunstgewerbeschule from 1908 to 1909 and then attended the Académie Julian until 1910. Coming from an academic training, Rebay von Ehrenwiesen was introduced to modern art when she moved to Munich afterward. In 1913, she exhibited at the Salon des Indépendant and honed her exceptional taste for nonobjective art after meeting Jean (Hans) Arp in 1915. In 1917, she participated in group exhibitions at the Galerie Dada and Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin. In 1927, she immigrated to the United States and recommended significant nonobjective art purchases to Solomon R. Guggenheim. These became the basis for Guggenheim's original Museum of Non-Objective Painting which opened in 1939 and was directed by Rebay von Ehrenwiesen until 1952. Her own private collection later became part of the current museum which she had commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design in 1943. Her artwork can be found at the Museum of Modern Art and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
