His 'slice of life' paintings typically feature numerous family members spanning generations - from infants to grandparents, engaged in play, courtship, mealtime or storytelling, delighting the viewer with their ebullient expressions and animated gestures. He typically worked on a commission basis, appealing to the Italian middle class as well as collectors abroad.
