It is a late work by the Bauhaus artist who was a student of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, whose influence still becomes obvious in the painting presented here. Shown is an abstract composition of variously colored geometric forms and shapes that appear on a bright, dapped pastel ground. The painting is signed and dated 'Otto Hofmann 85' and is in very good condition. The image measures 91 x 73 cm, the framed dimensions are 103 x 84 cm. The frame shows slight signs of wear. Otto Hofmann (1907-1994) The painter Otto Hofmann was born in Essen in 1907. He studied architecture in Stuttgart at first and then went to the Bauhaus Dessau in 1928, where he studied with Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, as well as Josef Albers and Oskar Schlemmer. On the invitation of the Kunstverein in Jena in 1930, he took part in the exhibition 'Young Artists of the Bauhaus Dessau', followed by other exhibitions in Berlin and Jena. During the Third Reich era, his works were called degenerate art. Shortly before the war he spent a year in Russian captivity, after he was freed he lived in Paris for some time and returned to Berlin 10 years later, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1966 to 1975. Since 1976 Hofmann lived until his death in Spain. His works can be found in public collections such as the Lower Saxony State Museum Hannover.
