Fyt had been trained under Frans Snyders (1579-1657), who held a busy workshop in Antwerp and introduced a number of students to his business. Between 1633 and 1634, Fyt went to Paris and travelled through Italy, in order to deepen his artistic skills. He then moved to Antwerp and established himself as a great master of hunting still lifes. The present painting seems deeply related to Fyt's artistic output and assembles a hare, partridges and a basket of fruits on a table. Condition: The canvas is relined. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the animals and fruits as well as to the background. The painting is however in good overall condition. The stretcher measures 79.5 x 92.5 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 97.5 x 110 cm.
