Dimensions: 54 x 74 cm Gilt ornate frame: 77 x 96 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Charming and romantic motifs with fairies and nymphs make up a large part of the work of the Viennese artist Hans Zatzka who worked mainly as a church painter Condition: The painting is in good condition, showing various areas of retouching to the background and to the figures. The canvas has been re-varnished. The frame shows only the lightest signs of use. The size of the painting is 54 x 74 cm, and the frame measures 77 x 96 cm. Hans Zatzka (1859-1945) From 1877 to 1882, the Viennese painter Hans Zatzka attended the local Academy of Fine Arts and studied with Christian Griepenkerl, Carl Wurzinger and Carl von Blaas. After living in Italy, he worked in Vienna as a freelance academic painter in the style of Hans Markat. Zatzka painted mostly without sketches directly onto the canvas. His wife and his two daughters often acted as a model. Zatzka painted numerous altarpieces and murals for churches in Vienna and Innsbruck. His favorite subjects were Madonna and Christ depictions, allegories, genre scenes, sensual female figures, cupids and elves, some of them of which were reproduced frequently at the turn of the century.
