He therefore preferred costume and dance scenes in the atmosphere of the Rococo and often worked with his wife, who became his favorite model. Furthermore Pellar repeatedly created idealized Rococo portraits that brought him to great financial success. The present painting shows a characteristic theater scene of the artist. Here, the artist combines modern art and Rococo impressions, as it turns out to be one of the artist’s central themes in art. Condition: The painting is in very good condition, consistent with age. There are only light marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals a few retouched areas to the lower edge. The panel measures 49 x 59.5 cm and the frame 67 x 77 cm. Hanns Pellar (1886-1971) Johann Andreas Alexander (called Hanns) Pellar was born in Vienna and discovered the local theater and stage scene as early as a child, due to his two older sisters, who were both active in this field. In 1901 he began his artistic training at the ‘Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Photographie und Reproduktionsverfahren‘. In addition Pellar briefly studied under the well-known artist Heinrich Lefler (1863-1919). In 1906 he finally moved to Munich, where he attended the class of Franz von Stuck (1863-1928) at the Academy of Arts. Here, the young artist explored a thriving city with festivals, exhibitions, theaters and cabarets that would deeply inspire his later artistic output. An exhibition at the famous gallery of Heinrich Thannhauser, eventually caused his artistic breakthrough in 1909. Only two years later Pellar followed an appointment of the Grand Duke of Hesse and established himself in Darmstadt. Pellar became a highly sought-after artist, mainly commissioned as portraitist by the upper middle class. Shortly after the seizure of power by the National Socialists, Pellar left Germany with his Jewish wife and traveled to France, England, Belgium and further surrounding countries. Since 1933 Pellar’s biography has largely not yet been explored, although he probably remained active as a painter in Vienna until the end of his life.
