Eckenbrecher’ Known and dated bottom left ‘Sandene (Nordfjord) 20.7.11’ Framed in a mat Dimensions: 23.4 x 31 cm Good condition The present work was created by the landscape painter Themistocles von Eckenbrecher. It shows the Sadane (Nordfjord) in Norway at sunset. The coloring is dominated by the purple and orange shades of the sunset. On the right side the schematic contours in black of coast and beach can be found. Norwegian fjord landscapes were a favorite subject of the painter. The painting is signed lower right ‘T. v. Eckenbrecher’. It is inscribed and dated lower left ‘Sandene (Nordfjord) 20.7.11’. It is framed in a mat and in good condition. The edges are slightly rubbed and left some small scratches can be found. The dimensions are 23.4 x 31 cm. The frame measures 35 x 43.5 cm. (bed) Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher (1842-1921) The German landscape and marine painter Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher was born in 1842 in Athens. As the son of a naval officer, he grew up at various locations, including Athens, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Constantinople and Potsdam. In Düsseldorf, he received private lessons in painting by the famous landscape painter Oswald Achenbach, who influenced him greatly. Eckenbrecher traveled to many parts of Europe, especially Norway and the Middle East as well as Africa and the Philippines. All these impressions result in the motifs of his paintings.
