Watercolor on laid paper USA/Ukraine, 2nd half of the 20th century Mikhail Turovsky (born 1933) - Russian-American painter and writer Signed lower left ‘M. Turovsky’ Matted and framed under glass in partly gilt wooden frame Sheet size: 39.7 x 29.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Strongly abstracted head by the Ukrainian artist Turovsky, who created a number of empathetic portraits alongside his famous nudes. Turovsky’s works fetch up to €55,000 on the international auction market The present work by Mikhail Turovsky (born 1933) dates from the time when the artist was already living in New York. Unlike his more famous female nudes that have yet clearly defined forms, it shows the portrait of a strongly abstracted head, composed of numerous fields of color, which in part merge shapeless into the background. One may feel reminded of a famous quote by Turovsky: ‘Man is afraid of prison although he himself consists of cells’. The sheet is signed ‘M. Turovsky’ lower left. It is mounted under a mat and shows needle holes of a previous mounting to the corners. The frame is slightly chipped. The sheet dimensions are 39.7 x 29.5 cm, and the overall dimensions, framed, are 52 x 42 cm. Mikhail Turovsky (born 1933) Born in Kiev, Mikhail Turovsky has been living in New York City since 1979.
