JOHN FREDERICK LOOS (Belgium, 19th c.) - Portrait of the American Sailing Ship "Servia", Passing the Cliffs of Dover, oil on canvas, signed lower right, marked Antwerp and dated 1888, Oliphant & Co. label verso, in gold gesso frame, OS: 33" x 46", SS: 26" x 39", cleaned, relined and retouched. Built by the Houghton Brothers in Bath, Maine in 1883 for their fleet. The "Servia" was one of the last 'Downeasters'. Her captain was Henry Nelson and her final home port was San Francisco.
