Note: Robert Falk created several portraits of the artist Lydia Vasilievna Chaga (1912 – 1995). Later, Lydia Chaga became the wife of art historian Nikolai Khardzhiev. The painting can be compared to The Nude in Black Stockings (LVChaga. 1940) from The State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after I.V. Savitsky (Nukus, Uzbekistan). The composition for the painting was inspired by Chaga and the paper flowers bought by Falk at the market. Robert Rafailovich Falk (RUSSIAN, 1886-1958) Born in Moscow in 1886, Robert Rafailovich Falk is a Russian painter who founded the group, the Jack of Diamonds. Deeply influenced by the work of French neo-expressionist painter Paul Cézanne, the artist was known to use several layers of paint to create a sense of form and volume. Falk studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in the early 20th century, going on later to teach at VKhUTEMAS (State Higher Artistic and Technical Studios). Condition: Unframed; L shaped tear in bottom of foot, additional tear lower left; craquelure throughout; previously repaired puncture in top center (visible square patch on verso).
