Pollex Tempel’ Dimensions: 63.5 x 42.5 cm Gilded stucco frame: 74.5 x 53 cm Good condition Provenance: Privat collection, Northern Germany Holsoe paints an interesting architectural detail of the extensive Forum area. The well-preserved impressiv columns of the Castor-Pollux temple rise up in the southern sky. Condition: The painting shows craquelure in places, which was repainted and the picture is overall covered with new varnish, therefore no retouching reveals under the UV light. The contours of the landscape and the column reflect white under a UV light. The varnish is partly somewhat soiled. The gilded stucco frame with brass plate is in overall good condition, it is slightly rubbed at a few places and there is a small defect with loss of material in the lower left corner. The picture is 63.5 x 42.5 cm in size and the frame measures 74.5 x 53 cm. Carl Vilhelm Holsoe (1863-1935) Holsoe was born in Aarhus as the son of the architect N.P.C. Holsoe. From 1882-84 he attended the Academy in Copenhagen and then changed to the painting school at Peder Severin Krøyer, here he became a friend of Vilhelm Hammershoj, who had major influence on his work. In 1886 Holsoe took part in the exhibition in Charlottenborg for the first time. He received several travel grants, including a stay in Italy in 1897. Alreadys during his lifetime Holsoe was a highly regarded painter, he showed his works not only in Copenhagen but also in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Munich and London.
